CLAT 2021 : A step towards your dream

Do you dream to study at National Law Universities but don’t know how to get into one? Well  CLAT is your answer.

The Common Law Admission Test popularly known as CLAT is a national level annual entrance exam for admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 22 National Law Universities all around the country. CLAT is organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities consisting of representative universities. It offers admission to over 3000 seats across all categories.

CLAT is a 2-hour test, with 150 multiple-choice questions carrying 1 mark each. There shall be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. The questions would be divided across the following 5 subjects:

  • English Language
  • Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
  • Legal Reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative Techniques
  • English Language

Candidates are provided passages of about 450 words each. These passages are derived from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing. Each passage will be followed by a series of questions that will test the candidate’s comprehension and language skills.

  • Current Affairs Including General Knowledge

In this section, candidates are provided passages of up to 450 words each. The passages will be derived from news, journalistic sources, and other non-fiction writing. The questions may include an examination of legal information or knowledge discussed in or related to the passage only. Each passage will be followed by a series of questions that will test the candidate’s awareness of various aspects of current affairs and general knowledge.

  • Legal Reasoning

In this section, candidates are provided to read passages of around 450 words each. The passages may relate to fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries. Candidates not require any prior knowledge of the law. You will benefit from a general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues to better apply general principles or propositions to the given fact scenarios.

  • Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section short passages of about 300 words each followed by a series of questions.

  • Quantitative Techniques

The Quantitative Techniques section includes short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial, or diagrammatic representations of numerical information, followed by a series of questions. Basic mathematical knowledge of up to grade 10 is required for this section of the paper.

There is no age limit to apply for the exam any candidates who have passed their 12th Board or equivalent examination with an aggregate score of 45% can appear for CLAT. SC and ST category candidates need an aggregate score of 40% only.

When to Apply for CLAT 2021 Exam

The notifications for the CLAT exam are generally released in the month of  December on their official website. Here is the initial Notification Chart of CLAT 2020.

A general guide to question format was approved by the authority to indicate the comprehension based Test. Paper setter always keeps in mind the 12th standard level of students appearing for CLAT and Quantitative analysis will be based on 10th standard mathematics content.

This year due to Coronavirus Pandemic the exam was postponed and took place on  28th September 2020 with all precautionary measures such as social distancing and sanitization. Also taking into consideration the safety of all the appearing candidates, candidates who were Corona Positive were not allowed to sit in the examination.

How to Apply for CLAT 2021 Application form

Applications are invited only through online mode at their official website.

The steps are as follows:

  • Visit the official website https://consortiumofnlus.ac.in/
  • On the home page of CLAT 2020, click on ‘Apply Online’.
  • After that click on ‘Click here for New Registration’ tab.
  • Read the important information and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
  • Fill basic info by providing Name, Father’s Name, Mother’s Name, Email Id, Mobile number and click on the ‘Save and Next’ button.
  • Once you complete this, a message will be generated that ‘you have successfully registered. Please check your mail to login’.
  • Fill login details and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • Upload your photograph, signature, and other necessary documents and click on the ‘Next’ button.
  •  Fill other details like your Qualification, Category, and NLUs preference.
  • Now, click on ‘Verify your details’  and then ‘Save & Next’.
  • Click on the ‘Review’ button to validate your filled-in details.
  • Click on ‘Final Submit’ and take the printout of it for future use.

CLAT Application Fee

Candidates can pay the application fee through internet banking/credit card/debit card. The application fee for General/OBC/SAP and other category candidates is Rs. 4000/- and Rs. 3500/- for SC/ST candidates.

List of Documents Required to Upload 

  • Passport size recent photograph with a plain background.
  • Signature of the candidate.
  • Category certificate if applying under SC/ST/OBC.
  • Relevant certificate for the respective State of Domicile.
  • Relevant certificate issued by a competent authority if the candidate comes under the BPL category.
  • Relevant certificate issued by a competent authority if applying candidate is P.W.D.

Things to Remember while filling the CLAT form

  • Fill application before the deadline to avoid the last-minute hassle.
  • Carefully fill in correct details because no changes are allowed after final submission
  • CLAT application form is submitted only through online mode
  •  CLAT application form should be filled in only once.
  • Keep all the documents handy to avoid any kind of mistake.
  • The application form is complete only if the fee is paid. Application without fee will be treated as incomplete.
